The Smart Forfour is the only model from Smart with more than two seats, making it a realistic choice as a small family car. The five-door hatch has a similarly youthful feel to the compact Fortwo helped by bold styling both inside and out. If you're after something that stands out then it's a good choice. There's decent space for those travelling in the back and it's cheap to run too with a range of economical engines. The small engines can be hard work, but the cdi diesels offer better performance.

There are two versions of the 1.5 cdi - either 68bhp or 95bhp. This is a three-cylinder engine and it offers decent in-gear punch for overtaking. Economy is an impressive 61mpg in both (64mpg in the automatic version). All cars come with a slick five-speed manual gearbox as standard while a six-speed automatic, known as softouch, is available as an option. A high performance Brabus version is also available. using a turbocharged 1.5-litre engine (different from the standard model) with an impressive 177bhp. As a result it can race from 0-62mph in just 6.9 seconds and is great fun to drive.
