Nissan Micra 1.5 DcI 86 Visia Diesel Hatchback...
The Nissan Micra set a new standard for small cars when it was launched in early 2003, and it's still one of the best around today. The looks may not be to everyone's taste but it's well equipped, cheap to run and there are some neat features available (like keyless entry). It's cracking value too - whether you're buying new or used while light steering and good visibility make it easy to drive and park.
All the engines are economical, especially the dCi models which can average more than 60mpg and the Micra makes a surprisingly good long distance car. It may not have the youthful image of rivals like the Mazda 2 or Ford Fiesta but it's still a good small car that's hassle-free and affordable to own.
The 1.5 diesel unit is the star of the line-up. Available in two outputs of either 65bhp or 82bhp, both offer serious economy of more than 60mpg along with punchy performance - the more powerful version is especially good and will happily eat up motorway miles with minimal fuss. From Summer 2005, Nissan added a bit of spice to the Micra range with the launch of the 160SR but despite the name it doesn't actually have 160bhp - instead it uses a 1.6-litre engine with a more modest 110bhp which delivers warm rather than hot hatch performance. It's still enjoyable to drive though and it's easy to exploit the power for maximum fun.
