Developing a replacement for the much-loved original Focus was an unenviable task, but Ford has successfully delivered. The second generation Focus is stylish, well equipped and is proving itself to be reliable. Plus while it's still as good to drive as ever, there's now more interior space and a genuine feeling of quality. As well as a Mondeo look front end, the interior has been vastly upgraded with better materials and more attention to detail. The eco-friendly ECOnetic model is available with CO2 emissions dropping to 99g/km, making it free to tax, while economy increased to 74mpg thanks to the introduction of an engine start-stop system.

One of the Focus's greatest strengths is its handling. Even models with modest powerplants offer an enjoyable driving experience thanks to responsive steering and nimble yet surefooted behaviour through bends. Rivals have sought to catch up in this area, but few can match the Focus. Ride quality also benefits from the sophisticated suspension which provides a settled and composed ride at all times, even in sportier models.

There are three diesel units - a 1.6-litre, 1.8-litre and a 2.0 litre which comes with 136 bhp. The 1.8-litre TDCi with 115 bhp pulls sweetly and has plenty of punch for effortless overtaking. All models come with a five-speed gearbox except the 2.0 TDCi, which is a six-speeder.
