The ultimate incarnation of the Audi A3 might not have the biggest engine or access to hi-tech transmissions, but it is comfortably the quickest version on sale. The four-cylinder turbocharged engine, slick-shifting six-speed gearbox and quattro four-wheel drive ensure swift, efficient progress. The Audi A3 2.0 TDi Sport 5 door hatchback was originally available as a three-door only, but a five-door Sportback version was introduced in 2008 when the model was also facelifted with sharper looks and an upgraded quattro system.

An automatic S tronic gearbox with six speeds is available as an optional extra (from late 2008) and uses two clutches to provide swift shifts. It's so quick in fact, it brings the 0-62mph time down to 5.6 seconds.
